Post Event Press Release The Conference „Rethinking EU Immigration: Legal Developments, Management and Practices”, a Success

Bucharest, 17 March 2014

The international conference "Rethinking EU immigration: legal developments, management and practices", held in Bucharest between 13 - 14 March 2014, brought together about 100 participants from the academic environment, public institutions and the civil society. The event was organised by the Romanian Association for Health Promotion, in a partnership with SOROS Foundation Romania, being the first conference of this kind within the project Research and Information Centre on Immigrant Integration.

Considering that once migration becomes more intense towards and within the European Union, the need to understand and to explain immigration and mobility is urgent in order to identify the most adequate responses both from the point of view of destination countries and of origin countries, the organisers proposed discussions related both to challenges and to opportunities.

The lecturers, who included well known names in this area internationally - Prof. Marlou Schrover – University of Leiden, Prof. Peter Nijkamp – VU University Amsterdam, Kamila Fiałkovska – University of Warsaw, Awale Mire Olad – Migrants’ Rights Network, Oana Ciobanu – University of Geneva, Ayse Guveli – University of Essex and Bernhard Perchinig – International Centre for Migration Policy Development Viena - had a multi-disciplinary approach to migration and migration policies. The presentations challenged participants with debates which continued - beyond the plenary sessions - within the four workshops.

"The conference aim was to raise the interest of the academic environment, researchers and professionals in the field for topical subjects related to migration, as well as to explore possible solutions to the social and economic issues which Romania and other European countries face currently", said Mădălina Argăseală, project manager.

The event participants appreciated the quality of the papers and the lecturers’ experience, as well as the opportunity they had to attend a scientific event, which is quite unusual in the field of migration in Romania. The different approaches coming from the academic environment and from researchers and practicians were complementary and allowed participants to gain an overall picture on migration in the EU and on its complex economic, social, demographic and political implications.

Notwithstanding the common European policies in the field of migration, practices differ according to the history, experiences and social systems in each member state. Globalization and the opening towards common markets creates both opportunities and challenges for the political structures and systems of European countries, and the public opinion and the media are important factors for the future of European migration.
