Post-event press release: the International Conference "Challenges Ahead: Integration of Migrants on the European Labour Market", a success

Bucharest, 17 march 2015

Post-event press release: the International Conference
The second international conference within the project Research and Information Center on Immigrant Integration (CDCDI) was held in Bucharest between 12-13 March. This event dedicated to migration was called "Challenges Ahead: Integration of Migrants on the European Labour Market" and brought together about 100 participants from the academic world, public institutions and the civil society. The event was organised by the Romanian Association for Health Promotion in a partnership with the Open Society Foundation.

Over the last two decades European states have developed more and more selective admission procedures. Thus both the education and the skills of migrants are important factors for their successful integration in the destination country. ”Human capital” finds relatively easily a place on the labour market. In these circumstances, highly qualified immigrants have to compete with native workers for jobs associated with a higher social status, which raises questions as to their actual chances to obtain those jobs. The conference aimed to generate discussions around questions such as: What happens to unskilled workers? How do they respond to the labour market needs and requirements? What is their future in the destination country? Is there any balance between migration and mobility in the EU? What are the perspectives both for mobile citizens and for immigrants in destination countries?

The lecturers included well known names at international level - Prof. Friedrich Heckmann – Bamberg University, Germany; Ferruccio Pastore, PhD - Forum of International and European Research on Immigration (FIERI), Italy; Prof. Maurice Crul – Erasmus University of Rotterdam and Free University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Prof. Timo Baas – Duisburg-Essen, Germany; Mrs. Anna Ludwinek - European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound) and Prof. Idés Nicaise - Leuven University, Belgium – and approached from a multidisciplinary perspective the effects of migration and mobility upon the European labour market. The presentations challenged the participants with debates which continued - beyond the plenary sessions - within the four thematic workshops.

The success of the event was due to the quality of presentations given in plenary and thematic sessions, the participants' diverse experience and the comparative perspective given by the participants outside Europe. The paper summaries and the presentations will be posted on the website www.cdcdi.ro, in the section dedicated to the second CDCDI conference.
