The Coalition for the Rights of Migrants and Refugees has been established
Press Release
A group of 11 Romanian NGOs active in the field of migration, human rights and public policies announce the official conclusion of the partnership laying the foundation of the "Coalition for the Rights of Migrants and Refugees" (CDMiR). Member organisations intend, through this coalition, to launch proposals for changes in legislation and institutional practices to facilitate the access of foreigners in Romania to education, employment, health services and other public services and also to initiate actions to improve the image of migrants and refugees in the public area.
"Although national legislation on asylum and migration has been largely aligned to European directives, we believe there are still many aspects to improve, from the point of view of both formulation and application. The objective is to encourage aliens with a long term stay in Romania to participate in the economic and social life, to have access to education and to know our values and culture", shows the Coalition manifesto.
There are currently about 100,000 foreign citizens living in Romania, of which about 64,000 originate from outside the European Union. These include refugees and economic migrants, students and family members. Despite their small number (below 0.3% of the population) which does not require the assignment of significant resources, these persons' access to services and goods is hindered by the lack of information and by procedures and legislation which are not correlated to the field reality. In order for these people to be treated with dignity, to develop a decent quality of life, to be able to manifest their culture, to be integrated in society, including by their contribution to economic development, they should be given unrestricted access to public services and institutions and they should be treated with less suspicion and more trust.
In this line the Coalition will prepare position documents on certain aspects of interest on migration practices, legislation and policies and will organise information/training sessions, seminars, conferences and public debates, as well as other activities to support the integration of migrants and refugees in Romanian society.
The founding members of the Coalition are: the Research and Information Center on Immigrant Integration (CDCDI) within the Romanian Association for Health Promotion, Conect Association, ICAR Foundation, the Centre for Public Innovation, ARCA - the Romanian Forum for Refugees and Migrants, the Romanian National Council for Refugees, the Advocacy Academy in Timișoara, the Centre for Intercultural Research and Communication Association Iași (CCCI), the Romanian Association for Promoting Quality and Successful Practices (ARPCPS), Filantropia Association in Oradea, the Association Solidaritatea Umană Nova Pitești. AIDRom joined them later.
The Coalition for the Rights of Migrants and Refugees is open to involving new members and supporters.
The initiative is part of the project “Development of a network of active organisations in the field of migration” (EMINET), co-funded through a grant from Switzerland through the Swiss Contribution for the extended European Union. For official information please see www.swiss-contribution.ro.
The development of the Coalition is also supported by NIEM project (National Integration Evaluation Mechanism): Measuring and improving integration of refugees and asylum seekers, an international project funded through the European Fund for Migration, Asylum and Integration, within a consortium comprising 17 non-governmental organisations and universities from 15 EU member states.
