The Romanian Office of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Romanian Forum for Refugees and Migrants (ARCA) supports the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) initiative to relocate 40 Iraqi refugees from Turkey to Romania. This is a project called "Relocating 40 Iraqi refugees from Turkey to Romania" (contract no. ERF12/01-06.01), financed from the European Fund for Refugees, 2012 Annual Programme.
Specific support will be offered within the project, both before and during the transfer to Romania and 30 days after the refugees’ arrival in Romania, according to a press release of IOM. The 40 refugees are split in two groups of 20 persons each, and are expected to arrive to Bucharest and Timişoara in May 2014.
According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) statistics, more than 9000 Iraqi refugees were present in Turkey in 2013. They belong to the largest groups of refugees in Turkey and they face difficulties to return home in dignity and safety, as well as to benefit from protection and integration opportunities in Turkey.
