630 work permits for foreigners issued by the Immigration Department of the Bucharest Municipality in the first 8 months of 2014

During the first eight months of 2014 policemen within the Immigration Department of the Bucharest Municipality issued work permits for 630 foreign citizens, out of a total of 1486 works permits issued country-wide by the General Inspectorate for Immigration. According to a press release of the institution, most permits were issued for workers from China (133), the Philippines (76), Turkey (61), India (33) and USA (26).

From the total number of work permits issued, 408 were for permanent workers, 133 for highly qualified staff, 62 for detached workers, 20 for the aliens having a right to stay for study purposes and 7 for sportsmen.

Out of the 630 permits issued in Bucharest, 56% were for higher education jobs, 41% for secondary education jobs and 3% for unskilled workers. The main fields where foreign labour is in demand are: IT, oil and gas, international cuisine, services, including house work.

During the same period policemen in the Department for Immigration of the Municipality of Bucharest undertook several control actions at employers, some of them in collaboration with staff of the Territorial Labour Inspectorate of Bucharest.

Companies in the fields of processing, IT and communications, retail and wholesale trade, health and social welfare, constructions, transport and storage, hotels and restaurants, services have been subject to controls. At the end of these control actions 65 companies were penalized, mainly for the employers' failure to comply with legal requirements to communicate the employment of aliens or the cessation of their labour agreement, as well as for accepting an alien for work without a work permit or a residence permit for work purposes.
