A special edition of the 2nd Volume of Migration Studies magazine was issued in July this year, called „Attitudes to Immigrants in Turbulent Times”. This issue is dedicated to the progress of anti-immigration trends in Europe and North America in the context of globalisation. The articles selected explore, from different perspectives, the way how interactions between states, citizens, immigrants and interest groups influence inter-ethnic relationships and the occurrence of hostile feelings towards immigrants in times of crisis.
The increase in migration flows towards certain regions, together with the economic crisis effects, generated an enhancement of anti-immigration feelings among natives and an intensification of nationalist tendencies. Despite the fact that North American and European economies have depended for decades on the contribution of immigrants, the perception of citizens of these regions towards immigrants has become negative over the last years.
The works in this edition debate different aspects of the overall topic: the impact of economic variables upon citizens' attitude towards immigration; the influence of research methods upon citizens' attitude towards immigration, with an emphasis on the level of racism and xenophobia; the evolution of anti-immigration feelings in Sweden; the role of mass-media in building inter-ethnic relationships; the change of significance of international migration after the events of September 2011 and the way how politicians influence inter-ethnic relationships using the immigration legislation.
The Migration Studies series, published by Oxford University Press, is dedicated to the scientific understanding of the determinant factors for migration, of the processes and outcomes of this phenomenon, in all its forms of expression.
