Belgium - Morocco: 50 years of migration

Mariana Andrei - Communication Coordinator

25 August 2014

50 years after the arrival of the first Moroccan workers in Belgium, the Federal Centre for Migration and the Research Centre in Demography and Society (DEMO) within the Catholic University in Louvain (UCL) published a demographic study on the population of Moroccan origin.

The Moroccan population in Belgium is currently estimated at approximately 430,000 persons, with recent migration being mainly due to family reasons.

The study, prepared by Quentin Schoonvaere (UCL), was presented in July this year in Brussels. This is the last of a trilogy of demographic studies on the three large non-European populations present in Belgium. The first study - on the population of Congolose origin - was published in 2010, and the second one - on the Turkish population - in 2013.
