Most foreign physicians in Germany are Romanians

Tudorina Mihai

6 June 2017

In 2016 the number of foreign physicians in Germany grew by about 10%, but the country still faces a shortage of physicians. Most foreign doctors work in hospitals. According to the German Medical Association, the number of foreign medical doctors in the country grew by 9.7% last year – reaching 46,721 at present. Thus 11% of the total number of physicians in Germany are foreign citizens. Ten years ago there were only 16,000 physicians from other countries.

The German daily newspaper Der Tagesspieg published statistics on foreign doctors in Germany. Most foreign physicians are Romanians, while at the same time "many hospitals in Romania are at risk of collapse" because of the lack of staff.

The highest growth was registered among medical professionals from Syria - following the war their number in Germany grew from 746 to 2895, an increase of about 35% in one year. The number of Romanian doctors also increased but to a much smaller extent, plus 223 in 2016.

The number of Romanians is the highest in this field: 4,285 physicians. Greece ranks second, with 3,118 physicians, then comes Syria. There are 2,600 physicians from Austria, 2,075 from Russia, 2,038 from Poland, 1,731 from Hungary and 1,634 from Bulgaria.

The positive outcome for the Germans has a drawback, writes Der Tagesspieg: most physicians from Eastern Europe and the conflict areas outside Europe migrate, thus deepening the medical staff crisis in their countries of origin.

The medical system in Romania is on the verge of collapse as a result of the doctors' migration. About 30,000 physicians have left Romania since 1990, with the preferred destination countries being the United Kingdom, France and Germany. This is not surprising, the German newspaper writes, considering that they can earn on average ten times more abroad than at home. The basic salary of a medical nurse in Romania is not yet 300 Euro.
