David Cameron intends to reduce benefits for immigrants in the United Kingdom

UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced in an article in The Telegraph that strict measures would be taken as regards benefits for immigrants.

One of these is reducing to half the period of time for which immigrants may receive social aids. In case they are not employed they will benefit for social aids for only 3 months, as compared to 6 months as per current legal provisions. “We changed the rules so that no one can come to this country and expect to get out-of-work benefits immediately", says the British Prime Minister.

Other measures consist of reducing the job vacancies published on EU websites. Cameron is determined to cut the number of UK vacancies advertised for EU workers by about 500,000. He also intends to apply strict measures to prevent colleges from offering visas to fictitious students. "We took radical action - closing more than 750 of these colleges", said Cameron. In the future if 10% of the students of a college are refused visa, the college will be closed.

The British Government decisions to make changes in immigration policies are justified by the PM by the need to reduce abuses in this field, such as selling study visas, which are actually a cover for illegal work, and the need to establish a fair benefit system in relation with native population.

Following Cameron's statements, the International Monetary Fund warned that “restrictive immigration policies in the UK could have a negative impact on productivity growth”.
