At least 24 clandestine immigrants died at the beginning of November trying to get to Romania. The ship with 40 Afghani and Syrian immigrants upset at the exist from Bosphorus Strait towards the Black Sea, not far from Istanbul, Turkish media said. According to Mediafax agency, there were 12 children and 7 women on board. Seven passengers were saved by the Turkish Coast Guard, with nine others being declared missing.
Turkey is an important route for illegal immigration from Africa and Asia to Europe. Illegal immigrants from Africa and the Middle East are frequently arrested in Turkey, and sea shipwrecks are quite frequent. The civil war in Syria raised the number of immigrants who leave Turkey and try to get to the European Union (EU), most of them through the Mediterranean, with destination Greece. The islands in the Aegean Sea became again in 2013 the preferred route of guides, following the strengthened control at the land border between Greece and Turkey.
The total number of immigrants who crossed the Aegean Sea in the area of the sea border with Turkey increased by more than three times between 2012 - 2013, from 3,345 to 10,508 persons. In 2014, 48 immigrants died at sea, as compared to 28 in 2013.
In the first eight months of 2014, the number of immigrants with no documents exceeded 17,000, with official sources estimating an increase towards 30,000 persons by the end of the year.
