INTERACT Analysed the Political Participation of Immigrants in Host Countries
Carmen Munteanu - Communications Coordinator
25 March 2014
The INTERACT project report was launched at the end of 2013, called "The political participation of immigrants in host countries: An interpretative framework from the perspective of origin countries and societies", co-financed by the European Union.
INTERACT - Researching Third Country Nationals’ Integration as a Three-way Process - Immigrants, Countries of Emigration and Countries of Immigration as Actors of Integration – explores the role of the institutional system in the countries of origin in integrating immigrants in destination countries. The report prepared by Ricard Zapata-Barrero, Lorenzo Gabrielli, Elena Sánchez-Montijano and Thibaut Jaulin builds a framework for interpretation of the role of origin countries and societies in the political participation of immigrants.
The research aims, on the one hand, to identify gaps in the relevant literature on the political participation and integration of immigrants, and on the other hand explores less studied areas within integration analysis: diaspora policies and transnational policies.
The paper draws a map of government and non-state actors in origin countries, their strategies and interactions with emigrants. The report also includes relevant case studies showing the role and impact of the political system in the countries of origin upon the political participation of migrants.
The authors propose a new framework for interpretation of the interactions between the institutional system in the country of origin and emigrants, applicable in the area of political participation, as a fundamental instrument for future research within the INTERACT project and with general usefulness for integration studies from the point of view of immigrants' political participation.
