Luxembourgers are concerned with the foreigners’ right to vote

Mariana Andrei - Communication Coordinator

10 July 2014

Felix Braz, Justice Minister of Luxembourg, has recently announced that two referendums will be organised - one in 2015, the other one in 2016 - regarding mainly the foreigners’ right to vote.

The first one will take place before July 2015 and will allow Luxembourgers to express their opinion about specific issues, such as foreigners' right to vote, setting voting age at 16, financing religious organisations, etc., while the second referendum, set for the end of 2016, concerns the new Constitution as a whole.

According to the francophone newspaper L'essentiel, there are currently two online petitions regarding foreigners' right to vote. The public petition in favour of this issue has gathered almost 1,500 signatures. Meanwhile, around 600 persons signed the petition against the foreigners' right to vote.

In Luxembourg, legal alien residents have the right to vote in local elections. Therefore, as the two referendums are national, they will exclude foreign citizens, who will not be able to express their opinion in this regard. However, several opinion leaders said that the foreign citizens' opinion matters and they suggested separate polls for this particular population group.
