Today’s condition of migrants and refugees is a matter of interest for artists as well, as shown by theatre plays, films and photo exhibitions on such subjects. The public interested in immigration in Romania has the opportunity to participate over the following days in cultural events, workshops and round tables which highlight migrants’ destinies, their stories and experiences.
The Austrian Cultural Forum, the cultural department of the Austrian Embassy in Bucharest in cooperation with Platforma Area organise a round table on "Migration Today". The event will be held on Saturday 29 March, since 11:30, at MNAC (The National Museum for Contemporary Art) - the Annex, on 62-68 Calea Moşilor St., 1st Floor, Bucharest. Participants will analyse the current condition of migrants and refugees, while Susanne Scholl, correspondent of ORF station and author of the book Allein zu Hause/Home Alone, will speak about the destinies of those seeking refuge in Austria from the pain and persecutions in their countries of origin. The event partner is the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
On the same day, Saturday 29 March at 19:30, the theatre play "Nu ne-am născut în locul potrivit" ("We were not born in the right place") by Alice Monica Marinescu and David Schwartz will be performed at the National Dance Centre in 80-82 Mărăşeşti Boulevard. This play won the theatre contest "A vorbi despre graniţe/Talking About Borders" and documents the destiny of refugees in the countries at the European Union border. Another play, "Slobodija Odysseia, mon Amour!" was selected for the repertoire of the European Capital of Culture Košice 2013. This play is based on Homer’s "Odyssey" and analyses themes such as flight and alienation. The play can be seen on Sunday 23 March at 19:30 hrs at the German State Theatre in Timişoara - 2 Mărăşeşti St., Timişoara, on Wednesday 26 March, 19:00 hrs at Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu - 2 Corneliu Coposu Blvd., Sibiu or on Friday 28 March, 20:00 hrs at ArCuB - 14 Batiştei St., Bucharest.
The film "The 727 Days without Karamo" features couples whose love is subject to an unique trial: one of the partners originates from a non-European country, which brings about an analysis of aliens’ rights in Austria. The film may be viewed on Friday 21 March, 20.00 hrs, at Studio Cinema in Bucharest; Saturday 22 March and Sunday 23 March at 19.00 hrs at Muzeul Naţional al Ţăranului Român - the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (Horia Bernea Studio).
