New violence in the Central African Republic

Mariana Andrei - Communication Coordinator

25 November 2014

Widespread violence in the Central African Republic in the last two months generated a massive displacement of vulnerable persons around Bangui, capital of the Republic, says the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

A preliminary review of IOM data suggests that the total number of displaced persons in the area increased from 4,000 to more than 64,400. A significant number of people try to find refuge in public buildings, churches, seminars, schools and hospitals. An association called Tournons notes: “The sound of gunfire and the thick smoke from burning houses in the neighborhoods scared many people and brings back terrible memories. We hope the situation stabilizes quickly so we can try to convince them to come back again...” Tournons, through an European Union funded programme to support communities at risk in Bangui, helped more than 70 families to return to their areas of origin.

IOM undertakes a monitoring programme of population movements in order to support ongoing humanitarian aid efforts.
