NORFACE (New Opportunities for Research Funding Co-operation Agency in Europe) is a network comprising 15 national organizations financing research in Europe and Canada.
Cooperation among the member organizations dates back to the beginning of 2004 and three transnational research programmes have been launched so far. The last two – “Migration in Europe – Social, Economic, Cultural and policy Dynamics”, launched in 2008 and “Welfare State Futures”, launched in 2012, are active.
The NORFACE Research Programmes on Immigration intends to capture the economic, social and political aspect, as well as the social dynamic of the phenomenon, through 12 transnational research projects, which will be finalized by the end of 2013.
The projects are grouped into three major themes: migration, integration and cohesion and conflict. Each project involved research teams from at least three participating countries (Estonia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Island, Ireland, Holland, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom; Canada and Austria participate as associated partners), with Christian Dustmann, Professor at the University College in London (UCL) as scientific coordinator of the entire programme. So far, nine out of the 12 projects have collected raw data both from quantitative and qualitative data and from thorough case studies and they have already begun to produce the first reports and papers.
The NORFACE programme for migration has had a total financing of approximately EUR 28 million, from contributions of the national research agencies of the 15 member states and from the European Commission.
The results of the NORFACE network were capitalized in the series of theme seminaries organized in 2005, 2006 and 2007, in the three transnational research programmes launched – Re-emergence of Religion as a Social Force in Europe (2007 – 2010), “Migration in Europe – Social, Economic, Cultural and policy Dynamics” (2008 – present) and “Welfare State Futures” (2012).
