More than 100,000 foreign citizens in Romania at the end of the first quarter of 2014

Carmen Munteanu - Communications Coordinator

10 April 2014

On 7 April the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) celebrated 133 years since the documentary evidence of the first legal act regulating the regime of aliens in Romania, "Legea asupra străinilor", dating back from 1881.

The institution used this opportunity to release recent statistical data on the number of immigrants in Romania. Thus at the end of the first quarter of this year, of the total number of 102,013 foreign citizens present in Romania, 60,358 originate from third countries (most of them from Moldova – 11,541, Turkey – 9,666 and China – 8,123) and 41,655 from EU, EEA states and the Swiss Confederation (Italy – 10,811, Germany – 5,640, France – 4,964), according to IGI press release. One third of the total number of foreign citizens have their residence in Bucharest. Other important counties regarding the concentration of aliens are Ilfov, Timiş, Cluj and Constanţa. More than 5,000 aliens live in each of these four counties.

During the reference period about 350 persons applied for a form of international protection. Most of them originate from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey and Iraq. IGI actually administers six Centres for Accommodation and Procedures for Asylum Seekers – in Bucharest, Timişoara, Galaţi, Rădăuţi, Şomcuta Mare and Giurgiu - and two Accommodation Centres for Aliens under Public Custody – in Bucureşti and Arad. The Emergency Transit Centre in Timisoara is the first of this kind in Europe and has put in practice, at international level, the concept of emergency relocation of refugees at risk of being sent back from the first asylum country to their country of origin.

The territorial services of IGI have attributions in admission and regulation of the right to stay, in aliens’ employment and secondment, prevention and fighting against illegal stay and undeclared labour on Romania's territory.
