The first relocated refugees will arrive in Romania on 3 March, announced the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI)

Laura Ștefănuț

4 March 2016

The first refugees relocated to Romania, following the binding quotas mechanism adopted by the JHA Council, will arrive in the country on 3 March. These are 11 asylum seekers coming from Greece who are to be hosted, most likely, at the Regional Centre for Accommodation and Procedures for Asylum Seekers in Galaţi.

The information was supplied by Eleodor Pîrvu, deputy director of the Asylum and Integration Department in the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI), within the debate "Immigrant Flow - a new test for EU member states", organised on Tuesday 23 February by LiderJust Association at the European Commission Representation.

The IGI representative showed that Romania will receive 1,705 refugees in the first stage and 4,500 refugees according to the second Council Decision, for 2 years. Until now the General Inspectorate for Immigration required that 190 persons should be transferred to Romania from Italy and 150 from Greece, also said the institution's representative.

According to his statements, taken over by Epoch Times, Romania does not face an afflux of asylum applications, with an annual average of 1,500 applications.

According to a recently adopted Decision, asylum seekers will be granted material aid consisting of 16 RON/day for food and daily allowance, as well as money for clothes amounting to 67 RON for the summer and 100 RON for the winter.

Rodica Novac from Conect Association presented data on asylum applications filed in Romania during the last two years, based on IGI data. A drop in the number of applications filed in 2015 as compared to 2014 can be noticed, from 1,547 asylum applications in 2014 to 1,266 applications in 2015. Less than half of these, namely 541 applications (42.73%), came from Syrian citizens. The data confirm that Romania is not facing a refugee crisis and that the country is currently able to meet the demand, by the 950 accommodation places distributed in 6 regional refugee centres, plus an additional number of 550 places.
