The campaign "Dilemmas of the Refugees", initiated by the UN Refugees Agency, is close to its end. On June 13th it will be replaced by the new campaign for 2013.
It was launched last year around the International Day of the Refugees (which is celebrated every year on June 20th) and its purpose was to make the public empathize with the refugees, put themselves in their place and ask themselves what they would do if they had the same dilemmas as the refugees have constantly. "Too often are the refugees mistaken with the illegal migrants in the public speech. Thus, we forget that the refugees have survived some incredibly dangerous situations and that they had no choice when they had to escape from their home", stated Gottfried Koefner, Regional Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Central Europe, according to the web-site of the institution.
The famous actress Angelina Jolie decided to support the campaign. She appeared in a video humanitarian announcement posted on youtube. ‘’Every single minute, 8 persons are forced to leave their homes because of the war and the persecution. Not a single person choses to become a refugee’’, says the star in the video.
The campaign was spread out on online, on different web pages and on social platforms, so those who wanted to find out more about refugees could watch recordings with stories and statements of such persons on the Internet. As far as Romanians are concerned, they were advised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to help the refugees in Romania to learn Romanian, to find a place to stay or a job.
Over the last two decades, 30,000 refugees received a form of protection in Central Europe (1,005 in Romania), since the countries of the region signed the Convention from Geneva in 1951 regarding the rights of the refugees. 80% of the refugees are hosted by the developing countries.
