Research assistant for MADE 'Migration as Development' project

The Department of Sociology of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research are seeking a research assistant to work on the ‘Migration as Development’ (MADE) project (2015 - 2020).

The MADE project aims to develop new theoretical and empirical approaches for studying the developmental drivers of human mobility in the modern industrial-capitalist era (the 19th and 20th centuries).

The assistant will support the management of the interdisciplinary research team working on the MADE project. Though not a formal requirement, candidates with experience and/or interest in migration research are particularly encouraged to apply.

Some of the tasks will include coordinating the MADE team research activities; supporting the team leader, Prof. Hein de Haas, as a personal research assistant; providing team members with logistical assistance for the planning of fieldwork activities; coordinating and managing project website; coordinating activities to ensure timely reporting to the European Research Council - ERC (funder), including contributing to writing financial and narrative reports, among other responsibilities.

Regarding the requirements, successful applicants will have: a BA degree in the social sciences or comparable; excellent (native-level) English communication skills; experience with editing and formatting social scientific texts; experience conducting literature reviews; excellent organizational and time-management skills; sufficient knowledge of Dutch (or willingness to learn) to navigate university bureaucracy; familiarity with MS Office, Endnote, NVivo and OJS; experience with managing budgets; and willingness to travel internationally on occasional work-related activities.

This is a part time appointment for 15.2 hours per week, initially for a period of one year and the gross monthly salary will range between €1,840 and €2,557.
