Foreigners Holding Documents Issued by Schengen Countries Are Granted Facilities When Entering Romania

Carmen Munteanu - Communications Coordinator

14 February 2014

Starting 1 February 2014 the holders of long-stay visas or stay permits issued by Schengen Area member states will no longer require a short stay visa to enter Romania. Thus they are entitled to an uninterrupted stay or multiple stays the duration of which should not exceed 90 days during any period of 180 days.

This measure was announced by the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) and it is the result of the adoption of the Government's Emergency Ordinance no. 109/2013 in December 2013, complementing Emergency Ordinance no. 194/2002 on the regime of foreigners in Romania.

The exemption from the short stay visa requirement to enter Romania for the foreigners holding documents issued by Schengen states is granted only if the number of entries and the duration of the authorized stay have not been exhausted. The foreign citizen's right to stay in Romania cannot exceed the right of stay granted by the visas or stay permits granted by the Schengen states.

Based on this new regulation IGI expects an increase in the inflow of citizens from third countries who travel to Romania for leisure or business purposes, as well as a decrease in the number of visa applications at Romanian diplomatic missions and consular offices abroad.
