FES Study: "Romania: refugees in a country of emigrants?"

Tudorina Mihai

9 March 2016

The Romanian government has openly expressed its position against the binding quotas for the distribution of refugees within the European Union. Nevertheless, no strong voices against refugees can be heard from Bucharest, as compared to other Eastern EU Member States.

The new study issued by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Foundation, „Romania: refugees in a country of emigrants?", by journalist Silviu Mihai, presents contexts and opinions on the refugee policy in Romania.

"... during the last years the number of asylum applications filed in Romania has been constantly below 2,000 per year (...). This makes it more difficult to form an opinion, to articulate a clear position and undertake a debate of principles on the refugee issue, as the current situation renders the whole discussion hypothetical and counterfactual. According to public perception, the refugee issue remains Western - European, despite intensive media coverage", notes the author Silviu Mihai.

The study is available online: "România: refugiați într-o țară de emigranți?" ("Romania: refugees in a country of emigrants?"), by SILVIU MIHAI, PERSPECTIVE | FES BUCHAREST, February 2016
