Swedish citizenship law amended

Mariana Andrei - Communication Coordinator

27 May 2015

Sweden is one of the few countries without integration requirements to become a citizen. For example, there are no income requirements nor language or civics tests. The new citizenship law, effective since 1 April 2015, does not change this.

The novelty is that it will be mandatory for every municipality to organize a citizenship ceremony at least once a year to celebrate new Swedish citizens and to highlight the importance of citizenship. Every new citizen by naturalisation is invited, but participation is voluntary. The ceremony is supposed to convey the message that Swedish citizenship is the most important legal relationship between the citizen and the state and that the citizenship entails freedoms, rights and obligations.

Another change is related to obtaining citizenship by birth. A child will always be a Swedish citizen at birth if one parent is a Swedish citizen.
