Turkey promises to make its border less permeable

Carmen Munteanu - Communications Coordinator

27 March 2014

Turkey, which is currently one of the main entry routes for illegal immigrants to the EU, signed in December 2013 the readmission agreement for illegal immigrants who transited its territory. Although political analysts are concerned about its impact upon Syrian citizens in need of protection, European officials believe the implementation of this new agreement will not affect refugees from conflict areas, who are protected by the Geneva Convention.

The EU’s negotiations with Turkey for the readmission of persons with illegal stay started in 2002, with Turkey demanding in exchange visa liberalisation for its citizens in the Schengen area. The progress of negotiations for visa liberalisation depends on how the readmission agreement will be implemented. Turkey will benefit from support from the EU for strengthening security and border control.

Renate Sommer (PPE, Germany) stated in a press release issued by the European Parliament (EP) that this measure, if implemented by Turkey, will decrease the number of illegal immigrants in the EU. "We will see whether Turkey will readmit people that illegally immigrated into the EU through its territory. Cyprus seems to be the major hurdle, as it still is not recognised by Turkish politicians (...). The island is an integral part of the EU, and therefore many of the chapters of the accession negotiations are frozen", said the European official.
