"We were not born in the right place"

Carmen Munteanu - Communications Coordinator

14 November 2013

One of the 6 plays of the political theatre programme, suggestively called "We were not born in the right place" tackles the issue of migration and refuge. The play, signed by Alice Monica Marinescu and David Schwartz (text and direction), stages the real story of five persons of different ethnicity, religion and social status. These are forced to leave their home country for reasons of war, social injustice, humiliations.

The actors play the roles of immigrants from Palestine, Iraq, Serbia, Afghanistan who lived the experience of refuge. Their dialogues are inspired both from real discussions and from fragments from the Guideline for Romanian Citizenship for Foreign Citizens.

With a slight irony towards those born here who often say "We were not born in the right place", the play aims to discuss in the public area fundamental aspects in the contemporary global context, such as: the fight against illegal migration in parallel with the need for migrants as a source for economic development, the need for refuge, the right to travel as a fundamental human right, the incrimination of "foreigners" as a scape goat for social and economic problems. At the end of the play the public is involved in discussions on the condition and histories of refugees and migrants.

The play, with English and Arab subtitles (translated by Bashar Al-Kishawi), is part of the Migration Stories project which also includes a tour in Timisoara and Somcuta Mare, where Accommodation Centres for Asylum Seekers are located. Migration Stories and the Political Theatre Season are financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration (Administrația Fondului Cultural Național).

The play will be held on Thursday 14 November, 19.30 hrs in the Platform Area (62-68 Calea Mosilor St., close to Sf. Gheorghe Square), with free access to all activities and events within the theatre programme, based on reservations.
