World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
Carmen Munteanu - Communications Coordinator
21 May 2013
Every year, on May 21, the International Day for Cultural Diversity is celebrated, thanks to the United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly, which set this day 11 years ago. As it is shown in resolution 57/249, UN acknowledges the connection between protecting cultural diversity and the vast framework of dialogue between civilizations, understanding the need to strengthen the cultural potential as a way of reaching prosperity, durable development and peaceful global miscegenation.
The European Union (EU) chose the slogan "Unity in diversity", officially mentioning the term diversity in the Instituting treaty of a Constitution for Europe, drawn up in 2004. This slogan strenghtens the idea that diversity is one of the European values promoted in recent years.
Diversity plays an important role in cultural and spiritual enrichment by knowing different lifestyles. Furthermore, through diversity we promote mutual respect and tolerance towards cultural difference inside a country or among countries.
Diversity contributes and promotes the building of a national identity based on intercultural dialogue, and such a dialogue is the key to unity and progress.
