Language support for youth with a migrant background

Mariana Andrei - Communication Coordinator

22 January 2015

Lack of knowledge on the language of their host country is an obstacle to migrant children's ability to understand and follow the classroom lessons, which results in a poor school performance, a lack of interest for education and even behavioural problems. To avoid such results schools should provide sufficient support for migrant children to learn and practice the teaching language. Teachers should also benefit from training to respond to the linguistic needs of their students in the best possible way. At the same time schools could also support the study of the children’s mother language, which would help them learn the host country language more easily and would also benefit the other students, by creating a varied cultural and linguistic environment.

The work “Language Support for Youth with a Migrant Background: Policies that Effectively Promote Inclusion” is part of a series of papers produced by the SIRIUS network in collaboration with Migration Policy Institute (MPI) Europe and focuses on the way how European Union (EU) and member state policies contribute to improving the education level of youth from migrant families. The report highlights the key points and provides good practice examples of programmes to support language learning.

Recent studies have identified a number of instruments and approaches to improve language skills of migrant children, including an appropriate initial assessment, language-focused induction programmes, training of trainers, valorisation of the students' mother language. Despite such examples, many states lack concrete support plans, which suggests their lack of interest in the transfer of good practices in this field.
