ICUB Research Seminar on migration: "Building ‘Deaths at the Borders Database’-methodological challenges" with Ignacio Urquijo

The event is part of the seminar series Migration in a Global Perspective hosted by The University of Bucharest Research Institute – Social Sciences Division and will take place on January 17, Room 102, Faculty of Sociology and Social Assistance, Panduri Campus at 17.00.
Abstract
In May 2015, the University Vrije of Amsterdam published the ‘Deaths at the Borders Database’, the first collection of official, state-produced evidence on people who died while attempting to reach southern EU countries from the Balkans, the Middle East, and North & West Africa, and whose bodies were found in or brought to Europe (http://www.borderdeaths.org/). Ignacio Urquijo was part of the team of field researchers who collected the quantitative information required for building the database. He was also part of the team who organized, classified and analysed the information collected. During this seminar, the author will present the strategies developed to gain the access to the state-produced information, the difficulties and solutions during the process of collecting the data and the challenges that analysing this information present.

Short bio: Ignacio Urquijo is a PhD student of the University of Bucharest and the University Complutense of Madrid (joint supervision). He is researching about the representation of the migration in the European media. He has a Master’s degree in International Relations by the University Complutense of Madrid and has published academic articles for the University of Oxford, the University of Palermo and the Spanish Association of Press, among others. This seminar is based in his work for the University Vrije of Amsterdam as a field researcher and analyser during the years 2014 and 2015.
